I have the privilege of addressing you as a fellow MDRT member and as your President. I am very happy you have been able to join us. Those of you who attended last year’s Annual Meeting, or the Global Conference, heard me reflect on the fact that, although life is good and can be exciting, it is not always easy. Even when you think you have done everything right, sometimes life throws you a curveball. While the arrival of a global pandemic was not the curveball I had in mind, here we are navigating a life-changing crisis that has affected every one of us.

Traditionally, the President’s message at Annual Meetings has focused on what was achieved during the year. Past Presidents have provided updates on current initiatives, told stories about their visits with members around the world and shared their reflections on the future. Serving on the Executive Committee has given me a front-row seat into all of that and so much more. Above all, it has shown me the essence of MDRT: its people.

I have had meaningful conversations with many of our members about what drives them to get up in the morning and do what needs to be done to serve their clients. I have visited places where the inner beauty of their people has inspired me to want to be better. I have been touched by the kindness and generosity of our members who often sacrifice family time in order to make our stays in their countries more enjoyable. To all of you whose paths have crossed mine, thank you for showing me the goodness that lies within you.

Since its inception in 1927, MDRT has been a source of knowledge and inspiration to financial professionals around the world. It has opened our eyes to the benefits of sharing and growing together. As MDRT members, we have embraced the unwavering commitment to excellence and professionalism. We care deeply about our clients and are dedicated to making sure we bring effective solutions to their most important financial challenges.

During these difficult times, our members have shown how strong, resilient and forward-thinking they are. From every corner of the world, they have been holding online workshops and networking events to continue expanding their knowledge and to reinforce the practices that have made others successful. From Asia, Africa, Europe and Oceania to North and South America and beyond, virtual learning has added tremendous value to our membership.

Our members have leaned in and faced these new challenges with optimism and with their sights on the future. MDRT Past Presidents have gathered virtually to check in with each other and to encourage and support our members and our current leadership. The MDRT staff has stepped up its already exceptional efforts, ensuring that the benefits we receive not only continue but get even better. While there is much to be proud of, we all recognize that it has not been easy.

The current situation has underscored the great responsibility we have not only to our colleagues and clients but also to our loved ones. As so many others, I too have experienced feelings of anxiety that can surface in times like these. I have a large family, including children and grandchildren, and I think about them all the time.

One of my sons, Rick, and his wife, Alana, are physicians working on the front lines at a large hospital in the United States. Their daily responsibilities in caring for patients during a pandemic is a constant source of concern to our entire family.

I am sure many of you are experiencing similar feelings brought about by the uncertainty we are faced with. We all see the world a bit differently now. What once seemed important may no longer be, and the things we often took for granted are now top of mind. While this pandemic has disrupted our daily lives, it has also reinforced the strength and determination of the human spirit. It has set us on a new course in this ever-changing life journey.

More than 2,500 years ago, Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu, said, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” To a casual observer, each step we take may seem unremarkable, one more in a lifetime of moments. Nevertheless, every action, every conversation, every decision reflects who we are and what guiding principles drive us.

I strongly believe that each one of us is called on to live a meaningful life. This can happen only when we align our talents, experiences, strengths and aptitudes with a sense of purpose. This unique combination elevates our lives and the lives of others and makes our journey a worthwhile adventure.

Over the years, I have observed and come to admire those who have mastered the art of living, the foundation for MDRT’s Whole Person philosophy of life. As the Zen Buddhist quote suggests, these individuals make little distinction between their work and their play. They simply pursue their vision of excellence at whatever they do.

While these men and women are often facing the same challenges we all do, they seem to be driven by a quiet sense of confidence. They are intentional about the way they live their lives and serve as powerful role models for the rest of us. Like candles that spread light in a darkened room, Whole Person masters radiate a higher energy to those around them. They do not necessarily seek attention and yet are easily noticed. The way they live their lives speaks volumes and inspires us to embrace loftier goals. We are fortunate to have among us members who exemplify this mastery in the art of living and, in doing so, have achieved ultimate wisdom.

My fellow MDRT members, let’s continue making a positive difference in the lives of others. Let’s emerge from this global crisis determined to embrace the experiences that bring us joy and a sense of accomplishment. Let’s infuse the world with MDRT’s message of excellence, service and significance.
