In today's fast-paced world, pursuing success often comes at the cost of personal well-being. Studies show a healthy lifestyle significantly boosts productivity, energy levels, and overall well-being, while unhealthy lifestyle habits are linked to lower cognitive performance and reduced productivity at work. For financial advisors, maintaining peak mental and physical condition is essential to meeting the demands of client interactions, financial planning, and long-term relationship building.
Before becoming a financial advisor, Will Grape Chua, a seven-year MDRT member from Pasig City, Philippines, was already an employee in an insurance company. He worked in the marketing department, transitioning to sales and agency recruitment. These roles gave him a deep understanding of the business, but when he became a financial advisor, he realized the importance of aligning his lifestyle with the values he was promoting. To be at the top of his game, Chua committed to a fitness journey that transformed his health and approach to success.
Transforming habits
When Chua first became a financial advisor, he faced an uncomfortable truth. He was tasked with selling health-focused insurance products, yet his lifestyle didn’t reflect the values he was promoting. Weighing 200 lbs with low energy, he asked himself. “How can I sell these health insurance products, especially to employees and businessmen like me, if I don’t look or feel healthy?”
Chua then started working towards a healthier lifestyle. He followed a balanced diet, committed to regular workouts, and tracked his sleep. At first, he followed influencer-led workout programs on YouTube, but as he became more attuned to his body’s needs, he developed his workout routine. “These days, I strive to squeeze in my workouts after work for 30 minutes. It’s non-negotiable that I do it every day. Working out helps me de-stress and still have energy after a long day.”
Besides feeling lighter and having more energy, Chua is now more focused and can handle an 8 am to 6 pm schedule, which he could not do initially because he usually felt tired. “I engage more deeply with clients, participate actively in meetings, and confidently tackle complex financial strategies.” He currently serves over 200 clients, who are mostly business owners and employees requiring flexible hours due to their busy schedule and professional commitments.
Furthermore, Chua has developed the discipline and resilience necessary to manage the demanding nature of his profession. “When you care for your body, you also care for your mind. I’m more present and engaged in my work and approach challenges with a clearer mindset.”
Inspiring others through his journey
His colleagues and clients recognized Chua’s transformation. He was even invited to speak at company wellness programs to share his experiences and to encourage others to embrace healthier habits. “I am grateful for the speaking opportunities the company and my colleagues have given. It allowed me to share that being fit isn’t just about appearance; it’s about feeling good and being capable of handling life’s challenges."
With a healthier body and a stronger mindset, Chua has become more adventurous, which has allowed him to do more activities that he once found challenging like sports, hiking, and going on long walks during travels. “Before, I hesitated to try new things, but now I feel lighter, more confident, and eager to explore.”
As he posts his activities online, he has inspired his clients to evaluate how they live their lives and make improvements. “Many of my clients were motivated by my transformation. They’re making small changes in their routines to feel better, too. I tell them ‘one small step at a time’.”
A long-term dedication to wellness and client servicing
The journey to wellness is not a sprint but a marathon. It requires long-term commitment and dedication. Chua emphasizes lifestyle change is a continuous process, much like how lasting relationships are built with clients. “Wellness and client servicing require a longtime commitment. It doesn’t end after you achieve your goal or close the deal. It’s only the beginning. Showing up and making decisions that align with your aspirations, career objectives, and clients’ goals are required.”
Chua’s healthy lifestyle helped him position himself as a reliable and energetic advisor who is there for his clients when they need him the most. “A financial advisor is not just about selling insurance but about being present and available for clients in the long run. Now that I have more than 200 clients and would meet them personally occasionally, having a strong and healthy body helps me address their needs with energy and focus.” Since he is healthy in mind and body, Chua gives sound advice and is his clients’ dependable partner.
“Since I can care for myself, I know I can better care for my clients.” His success in overhauling his health has fueled him to guide his clients toward financial security. He is the first to say that all the hard work has been worth it, as he has achieved success for himself and his clients.
